Santa Marina Salina, Aeolian Islands – Italy – Day 3

Saturday 22nd October 2022 I forgot to mention that we had a very lovely meal, a bit fine dining for us which is unusual. We shared an entree of Octopus salad which was lovely except for the capers, David had stuffed octopus and onions for his main and I had spaghetti with pistachio pesto, tomatoes, capers and baked ricotta. We finished off the meal with chocolate and vanilla parfait for David and traditional Sicilian Cannoli with pistachio for me. It was a very enjoyable meal. Well today we head to Vulcano Island. Vulcano is one of the Aeolian Islands. Famous for its mud baths, the island literally smells like rotten eggs (sulfur). We caught a ferry to Vulcano at 10.30am, a 45min ferry ride (23 euro each way). When we arrived it was already quite warm, so we bought an extra drink and headed straight to the trail to hike to the top of Vulcano. This was to be our adventure for the day. When we arrived at the trailhead there was a sign forbidding any walking on the trail. Unfortunately the trail has been closed since July for safety due to the gas emissions. Oops!! So that plan has been foiled for today. whilst we sat near the trailhead working out our new plan for the day a carabinieri car with 3 policemen arrived, 2 got out of the car, explained to us we couldn’t walk and they proceeded up the trail. We had seen people up along the ridge who had obviously ignored the warnings. Apparently it is a 500 euro fine. They would have made their wages today. We walked back to town and decided to hire a 50CC scooter for the day (30 euro plus 9 euro for petrol). I didn’t want to drive so we doubled on the one scooter. David was a bit sketchy to start with but after a while he got the hang of it. I was surprised, I just expected he would be good at it but he thinks having me as a pillion made it a bit harder. Anyway he improved quickly and we explored the whole island over the next 4 hours. We enjoyed some lovely views, had lunch at a lovely viewpoint and didn’t leave many roads untouched. We had a great day! We dropped the bike back around 4pm and then sat in a cafe for the next couple of hours waiting for the return ferry. We enjoyed a granite which is like a slushy, this is another traditional thing in Aeolian Islands. David tried Limone and I had almond, the almond took a bit of getting used to but by the end I quite enjoyed it. The Limone was a lot nicer. We caught the 6.25pm ferry home to Salina arriving back at 7.15pm. We picked up a pizza own the way home and went home for a rest.
