La Grande Motte – Tour to Mediaeval City & Pont Du Gard

First day of our tours organised by Anita. We were to head to Pont Du Gard for a canoe paddle, followed by lunch and a tour of the Aquaduct and Museum. Unfortunately the poor weather from the day before and the stormy night saw our canoe paddle cancelled. The paddle was replaced with a tour of a mediaeval village called Aigues-Mortes (St Louis City) It was originally a mediaeval fortification with jail and crocodile moat. The view from the top of the main tower was amazing and showed the entire area of fortress. The cobblestone street was a row of shops and cafes and was lovely. Outside the fortress the streets were picturesque and there was an old style merry-go-round on display that was the same as we had when I was a young girl. We then drove to the Pont du Gard for a lovely 3 course lunch and a tour of the aqueduct which was built by the Romans in the 1st century and the road across the valley alongside the bridge by the French in the 18th century. The tour was very informative – the aqueduct was 50km long and ended in the city of Nimes. For the engineers – it had a gradient of 27cm per kilometre – amazing precision for the era. The blocks were made at the quarry 600m from the Pont du Gard bridge. The museum was also quite interesting displaying tools etc used to build the aqueduct. There were 3 olive trees along the roadside that had been transplanted from Spain and were 1000 years old.
